Hi folks,

I’ve been interested in the Stanley/Ireland/Irwin family connections, and have collected some information

as noted below.  It is understandable from the perspective of history why these families would inter-marry.

Of course, it would have made life with your in-laws much more complicated!  🙂

Also:

Dictionary of National Biography says:

"By a lady who shared his episcopal residence at Somersham he had
at least two sons, John and Thomas, and a daughter, Margaret, who
married Sir Henry Halsall of Halsall. The elder son, John, fought at
Flodden Field on 9 Sept. 1513, was knighted, and founded the family
of Stanleys of Hanford, Cheshire"

Flower's Visitation of Lancashire (1567) says under Halsall that Sir
Henry married Margaret base daughter of James Stanley, but the
same Visitation under Ireland says that Sir John Ireland married that
same daughter.

Victoria County History of Lancashire under Blackburn:

Henry de Halsall (knighted 1497) married Margaret Stanley daughter
of James Stanley, clerk. Sir Henry died June 1522. James Stanley is
usually identified with James Stanley, afterwards Bishop of Ely. Sir
Henry de Halsall's will dated 1518 provided for his younger sons -
mentioned his deceased wife Margaret.

and under Ireland of Hutt:

Sir John de Ireland (knighted 1497) died 29 July 1525, married an
illegitimate daughter of James Stanley, Bishop of Ely.

A new book called "the House of Stanley" by Peter Edmund Stanley
