Obituary for John Stanley Hardy – 1921


We take the following from “The New Weekly News” of September 8th:- Widespread sympathy and grief were felt in the parish and neighbourhood of Welford-cum-Wickham, when the sad news came known that Mr. John Stanley Hardy (elder son of the Rector) had passed away on Monday morning. The deceased had been ailing for some time, but it was only quite recently that serious symptoms developed, which made the shock all the greater to the many friends of the gentle, scholarly boy, who had endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. The funeral took place on Thursday at St. Gregory’s Church, Welford, the Rev. R. J, Burbridge officiating. The hymn, “Christ will gather in His own,” was sung, Miss Smith being at the organ. The mourners were Rev. C. E. and Mrs. Hardy (parents), Miss Hardy and Mr. F. Hardy (sister and brother), Messrs. S. and W. Hardy (uncles), Miss Chambers (aunt), Mr. Crowe (cousin). Amongst those present were: Capt. and Mrs. Charrington, Mrs. Cobbold, Mrs. Hobbs, Mr. Drury, Mr Thomas Dreweatt, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Pope, Mr. Honor, Nurse Wlkes, Miss Wilkes, Major and Mrs. O. P, Attewel, Miss Attewell, Messrs. Brown and Shunn, and many other friends and parishioners who came to show their affection for one who had gone so early to his rest, and sympathy with their beloved Rector and his family. The coffin plate bore the inscription

John Stanley Hardy,
Died August 29th, 1921
aged 20 years

Cobbold and Ralph; the Organist, Verger and Choir of Wickham Church; Nurse Wilkes; Wickham Villagers; Auntie and the girls; Mrs. J. Crowe; Emily and Phyllis; Mildred and Mabel Attewell, Mr. and Mrs. R. Crowe, Mr. and Mrs. MacFarlane.
